Sonam Kapoor is a global fashion and luxury icon, often referred to by the West as the cultural ambassador of India to the world.
According to a global fashion report, Sonam was amongst the list of celebrities like Zendaya, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Blackpink, BTS, etc who had the highest impact on luxury fashion brands in 2023!
Sonam is the first Indian to make fashion a serious subject of discussion in India and is credited for synergising fashion with films as the concept of red carpet looks for actors was her brain-child.
The gorgeous actress is the last word in fashion in India as she impacts pop culture significantly through her sartorial choices. Sonam is batting for slow fashion and the need to turn towards embracing vintage in pop culture.
Sonam says, “I make sure to wear and do things that have no negative impact on anyone. I strive to make responsible choices. I have always believed in slow fashion, buying classic, beautiful pieces, and reusing vintage clothes. I don't support fast fashion, as it is wasteful and harmful to the environment. However, I understand its necessity for those who can't afford luxury vintage fashion.”
She adds, “I am a strong supporter of second-hand websites, despite it not being part of our culture. Indian culture embraces local tailors and artisans, which is a form of slow fashion not readily available in the West. We need a combination of both: making tailoring clothes accessible in the West and accepting the mentality of wearing someone else’s clothes.”
Sonam wants to use her influence as the biggest voice of fashion in India to create awareness about conscious fashion.
She says, “As actors, we have an impact, and people like to follow what we do. I hope people turn to vintage and adopt it as a lifestyle choice. It is imperative because our wasteful ways is hurting the environment and the planet.”
On the work front, Sonam has two tent pole projects, one of them being Battle for Bittora. The details of the other project are being kept under wraps currently.
