Plot : Nawabuddin Saifuddin Rahman (Vijay Varma), in pursuit to save his father’s printing press in the heart of Purani Delhi, becomes a disciple of Aziz played by Naseeruddin Shah, a retired poet and falls in love with his daughter Minni, a teacher, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh. Torn between his love and honoring his mentor, he must make a choice that could change his life forever.
What We Loved : The fact that it brings back stillness, charm of the old world romance and poetry in motion, which is lacking by far in today’s cinema, is the most remarkable asset of Gustaakh Ishq.
What We Liked : The conflict of the film is super intriguing and lingering. And what is a love story without a conflict?! The dynamics between all the primary characters are individual and unique and these layers add a lot to the storytelling.
Performances : Naseeruddin Shah as a poet who doesn’t want fame or money via his work, proves why he an institute of acting in himself. His dialogue delivery, the pain in his eyes, the love he builds over time for Vijay’s character is unmissable.
Vijay delivers one of his career’s most nuanced performance where we can see shades flamboyance, self doubt, anger, desperation and the yearning to learn all snowballed in one.
As Minnie, Fatima Sana Shaikh brings back the calmness and poise of the yesteryear’s actresses yet brings in novelty using her special talent. Her eyes do the talking and her emotional range is superb and consistent from start to end.
Director’s Cap : Vibhu Puri hasn’t just directed the film but also has co-written the dialogues of the film along with Prasshant Jha with finesse & precision. Not to forget, the earthy locations fit like a glove!
Conclusion : Gustaakh Ishq is an experience both visually and sonically. The dialogues, the couplets, the performances & the brilliance in music makes this film super special and extremely watch worthy.
