Ajay Devgn's sports drama Maidaan didn't do well at the box office when it released in April. Unfortunately, producer Boney Kapoor faced more trouble than just the film's poor performance. Before the film came out, a vendor who had supplied equipment for Maidaan sued Boney for not paying ₹1 crore over a two-year period. The court eventually ordered Boney to pay ₹96 lakh to settle the debt. Now, Boney is in the news again for similar reasons, as actor Arshad Warsi has criticized his production house.
Actor Arshad Warsi accused Boney Kapoor’s production house of short-changing him. Arshad shared that he was hired as a choreographer for the 1993 film Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, starring Sridevi and Anil Kapoor. He told the team that choreographing the song would take 4 days and his rate was ₹1 lakh. Although they asked him to complete the work in 3 days, he accepted the challenge and finished on time, saving them money. But when he went to collect his payment, he only received ₹75,000.
When Arshad Warsi asked why he was paid less than the agreed ₹1 lakh, he was told that the fee was for 4 days of work. Since he completed the job in 3 days, the production house deducted ₹25,000 from his payment. Arshad noted how the industry has changed over time, mentioning that today, managers and lawyers help ensure fair deals. He hopes that having formal contracts will prevent others from being underpaid like he was.
