Sunny Deol recently announced the sequel to his 1997 hit film, Border. It was initially speculated that Ayushmann Khurrana would join Sunny Deol in leading roles for the film, directed by Anurag Singh. However, according to a Mid-day report, Ayushmann has decided to step away from Border 2 after several months of discussions. The report cites a source who reveals that Ayushmann was "unsure of his positioning" within the ensemble led by Sunny Deol, a major star in his own right.

Ayushmann was initially in talks to play a soldier in the sequel. Despite mutual interest in the collaboration, the actor felt uncertain about his role in the Sunny Deol-led ensemble, the source said.

There have also been rumors that Punjabi actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh might join the cast. The source mentioned, "Nothing is confirmed yet, but Diljit has been approached. It would be exciting to see Diljit and Sunny together on screen, given their strong fan following in north India." The film is anticipated to begin production in November.

Director JP Dutta's classic Border celebrated its 27th anniversary in June 2024. Sunny Deol marked the occasion by announcing the sequel, Border 2, on Instagram. In his announcement video, Sunny said, "27 saal pehle ek fauji ne vada kiya tha ki vo vapas aayega. Ussi vaade ko poora karne, Hindustan ki mitti ko apna salaam kehne, aa raha hai" (27 years ago, a soldier made a promise that he would return. To fulfill that promise and salute the soil of India, he is coming back).

Sunny also wrote, “Ek fauji apne 27 saal purane waade ko pura karne, aa raha hai phirse” (A soldier is returning after 27 years to keep his promise). Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, and directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 promises to be one of India’s biggest war films.
