Aamir Khan wasn’t satisfied with PK till the end, but somehow the Movie worked

Recently, Aamir Khan opened up about what didn't go according to plan in PK, and why Christopher Nolan played a pivotal part in adding to this unhappiness.

However, when Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani decided to join hands again for PK, hoping for a similar response, it didn’t land in the correct place. While the film was a huge box office success earning around Rs 340 crore in India, Aamir recently shared that neither he nor the director were happy with the film.

Speaking to Just Too Filmy, Aamir opened up about what didn’t go according to plan in PK, and why Christopher Nolan played a pivotal part in adding to this unhappiness. “Raju and I weren’t happy with the final resolution of PK. He had thought of something else altogether. But then Nolan’s Inception hit the screens,” said Aamir, who revealed that the initial idea for the climactic portions of PK was a play on altering perceptions by going back in the past. “We wanted to explore the idea of how we could change anything that we think we feel strongly about. But then, Inception was released, and Raju was convinced that people would say he stole the idea from the Nolan film.”

Aamir said that there were multiple revisions to the film, and they rewrote and reshot a few portions. “We spoke and we discussed before the release that ‘Raju, we haven’t been able to make the film we wanted’. I wasn’t fully happy and he wasn’t either. We weren’t fully happy with the film, but this was the best version we could think of. But people connected with the film, and they liked it. But we were not happy till the end. We couldn’t figure out what else to do,” he said and added that at one point, he tried to convince Hirani that he should forget about Inception.

“I told Raju that you forget that Nolan has made the same thing. Because then, you can’t say what you want to say with conviction. Let people say we have copied Inception, we will say we haven’t. Every film is unique. Sometimes concepts match but someone like Raju will have his take on it. I told him not to change. He said no we have to,” said Aamir. If Inception was one obstacle, the other roadblock came from Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal-starrer OMG – Oh My God. “There were a few similarities with OMG too. There were similarities because both films dealt with the same theme. But Raju was steadfast that certain portions had to be rewritten to avoid any comparisons with OMG,” said Aamir.

Incidentally, in an earlier interview, Hirani spoke about this Inception connection, and shared with Komal Nahta, “PK had the power of getting into people’s minds and changing what they had experienced in their life. Because we felt, that you become cynical about certain things if you have experienced life in a particular way. So if your experience can change, your cynicism will not be there, you become a different person. So we went on that path. So we realized if you do this, it will look like we have copied Inception.”
