1. When They Cry (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni)

Starting this list with Higurashi: When They Cry (Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni), which is an adaptation of the game series which goes by the same name. The story shows the time of June 1983
displaying a fictional village known as Hinamizawa. The protagonist Keiichi Maebara agrees to leave his hometown for Hinamizawa after witnessing many disastrous events in his hometown. Now he spends most of his time in the company of his school friends. Regardless, Hinamizawa, like most sleepy towns, has its dark secret. Impressions can be deceiving here. Keiichi stumbles upon the news of a murder in Hinamizawa one day, which is then followed by some unusual events. He finds that there could be danger of living with his friends.  It is just scarier to know that a group of friendly whack jobs won’t leave you alone!

2. Another

Sitting on the second spot in this list is Another, one of the most terrifying horror anime to date. Having 12 episodes filled with creepy and mysterious murders that would give you nightmares. Yomijama North Middle School’s Class 3-3 created a bad name for itself after a student died there 1972. After that everyone in school pretended as if nothing had happened. Because of a jinx or curse, all its teachers, students, and their family members are at the risk of dying. This plot is inspired by the movie Final Destination.

3. Corpse Party – Tortured Souls (Bougyakusareta Tamashii no Jukyou)

Third on this list is another excellent scary anime, Corpse Party – Tortured Souls, a very short scary anime series with only 4 terrifying episodes, to be precise! another fictional story that takes place inside Heavenly Host, an elementary school which is demolished because of the recurring disappearances and murders of its students and teachers. As time goes, another school named Kisaragi Academy is built on top of the mysterious Heavenly Host School, But still, these incidents keep on to happen


Bending more towards the fantasy genre of horror anime, Hellsing is a short anime series that has won millions of hearts with its silhouette of particular fantasy creatures, vampires in action. Van Helsing, the popular vampire Hunter of the Dracula legend, who slays anomalies even after his demise. This anime is inspired by his scary story. It shows the adventures of a vampire named Alucard and his friend Seras Victoria, who’s a police agent who is turned into a vampire. They work for a vampire termination organization named as Hellsing in England.

5. Tokyo Ghoul

The story portrays a boy named Ken Kaneki as the protagonist. He meets a cute scholar going by the name Rize, who’s a ghoul. Ghouls higher species of zombies as they look exactly like humans and can easily mix into society. The only difference between them is that ghouls can only eat humans. And not to forget they have special powers to hunt their victims! This horror anime is a perfect mix of terror, mystery and tragedy!

6. Elfen Lied

Another classic horror anime, Elfen Lied has too much barbarity and bloodshed that attracts horror movie lovers. Elfen Lied shows mutants in human form with horns, named as Diclonius, who has strong telekinetic powers among his other abilities. They’re all locked up and isolated from society inside a research centre, run by the government. The girl gets shot in her head and ends up on a beach with a couple of teenage cousins. The boys take the naked and crazy girl home unaware of her true identity.

7. Parasyte (Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu)

Parasyte sits comfortably on the seventh position on this list, being full of body horror, alien aggression and pseudo-cannibalism. The protagonist of the series is a 17-year-old boy called Shinichi Izumi who lives in a Tokyo neighbourhood, with his parents. The entire neighbourhood becomes the main target of a horror swamp when it is seized by worm-like aliens, who enter humans via their noses or ears, turning them into monsters.

8. When They Cry (Umineko No Naku Koro Ni)

Also called as the 3rd part or When They Cry 3, this is the third television anime series adapted from the game. It series shows an alternate setting of the first series, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni. The plot is identical to other typical horror anime, but the history and growth of the various and dreadful cast help to add the mystery and terror of the story.

9. Ghost stories (Gakkou no Kaidan)

Also known as Ghosts at School, this series tells the story of a woman named Satsuki Miyanoshita who moves with her family to her late mother’s hometown, after her death. On the first day of her school, Satsuki’s little brother, and few people along with his other friends from the school decided to hop into a deserted school building next to their school complex, only to know that it is haunted.

10. Mononoke

Mononoke displays the character of Medicine merchant who confronts many mysterious dangers. These stories happen during the Edo era of Japan. The Medicine Seller doesn’t mind confronting the strange spirits known as Mononoke. Also, he effectively uses his understanding of the supernatural beings to repulse the spirits, until he learns about the truth of their reason of existence and shape.

11. Shiki

Although Shiki may seem to cruise on certain occasions but underneath the cheerful voice-overs, amazing animation and colourful impressions, you’ll find something very threatening at play. The story shows 15-year-old Megumi Shimizu who dies suddenly in the silent village of Sotoba, occurring in a vicious epidemic and plenty of blood and terror. Then the series show Toshio Ozaki, a young doctor who in search of truth rejects his humanity. Natsuno Yuuki who is disturbed by her friend’s death helps him maintain the peace in the village

12. Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl)

Where you aware that there’s a website that you can only visit at midnight. It’s named the Hotline to Hell, and all it contains is a black background a sentence saying: “I will exact your vengeance.” If you write a name into the box, you can choose what so ever curse your target should get from hell, as long as you too follow it when you die. Enma Ai, the Hell Girl, is the negotiator who creates these agreements and sets them in action. No one is pure evil, and no one is innocent.

13.Ghost Hunt

Spooky scary ghosts are common in all horror movies and anime. This anime shows sixteen-year-old Mai who is dragged into helping an organization named Shibuya Psychic Research after she accidentally breaks some of their equipment. It’s quite a long supernatural anime for you.

14. Yami Shibai

This is a fascinating anime you won’t want to miss! Animated in a style made to look like ancestral paper puppets, each episode of Yami Shibai tells the story of a different Japanese urban legend or myth that would scare you to your bones.

15. Monster

Sometimes the scariest things in horror anime are not mysterious monsters or ghosts, but human beings. The beginning of Monster shows Kenzou Tenma who is a surgeon and is confronted with a difficult choice: the life of the mayor, or the life of a child?
