Supreme Court granted interim protection to Aparna Purohit in connections with the FIR’s lodged against her over Tandav. The Saif Ali Khan starrer web-series came under the radar of the people who alleged the makers of misrepresenting Hinduism. The Allahabad HC rejected the bail plea due to which Purohit challenged the decision in the Supreme Court.
“Petitioner is cooperating in Lucknow FIR and HC has granted protection. She is ready to cooperate in the investigation. It is submitted that the petitioner is @amazon India head and concerned with writing and production of web series. Considering the facts, we issue notice and we direct petitioner shall not be arrested in FIR no 14 of 2021 subject to her cooperation,” said Justice Ashok Bhushan.
However, the bench also said that there is a need to monitor the OTT platforms. “Law has to be framed to put in place a mechanism to control OTT platforms instead of mere guidelines. The new guidelines of the government on regulating OTT platforms like Netflix & Amazon Prime Video has ‘no teeth’ as there is no provision of prosecution” the bench said.
The Allahabad HC said that the alleged has been vigilant and has done the mistake of showcasing some scenes which were against the fundamental rights of citizens, therefore not acceptable.
