Indian cinema is full of drama, songs and romance. Very few films have been made which is a cutting edge mystery thriller. Kahaani was one such film that kept you on the toes with a towering performance by Vidya Balan, Parambrata Chatterjee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Saswata Chatterjee. As the mystery drama completes 8 years today, let us check out how much the Sujoy Ghosh directed collected in its lifetime.
2 Years Of Badla – When The Taut-Thriller Became The Highest Grossing Film Of Amitabh Bachchan, Taapse Pannu And Sujoy Ghosh
Kahaani tells a story of a pregnant woman comes to the city of joy, Kolkata, in search of her husband who has been absconding after 2 years of their marriage but to her shock, the people of the city doubt his existence.
Kahaani was directed by Sujoy Ghosh (Jhankaar Beats) and was not a usual Bollywood drama with a happy ending but actually was out-of-box thought with a complex story. From the beginning till the end of the movie, you cannot predict what is going to happen next. The story was superbly told with lots of twist and turns. The screenplay was tight and holds your attention in every frame. Dialogues were well told along with eye-catching cinematography by Setu. The ace cinematographer had portrayed the rich heritage and culture of Kolkata during the Durga puja festival with aplomb. The streets and lanes of Kolkata (including my area where this film was shot) was nicely captured.
Performances by the star cast was like an icing on the cake. Vidya Balan was electrifying and natural, playing the character of Vidya Venkatesan bagchi. The brilliant actress was superb in her dialogues and emotes expressively through her eyes. Bengali actor Paramabrata Chatterjee does justice in supporting role along with brilliant acting done by Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Mr.Khan and Saswata Chatterjee as Bob Biswas. I would also like to mention the song “Ekla Cholo Re” beautifully sung by great Amitabh Bachchan.
According to the Boxofficeindia.com, Kahaani was released on 9th March, 2012 at 1100 screens to Rs 2.91 crores. The film collected Rs 13.36 crores in its first weekend and went onto collect Rs 23.79 crores in its first week. Kahaani ended its theatrical run with Rs 57.81 crores against a budget of Rs 20 crores and turned out to be surprise “Hit” of the year at the box office.
