2 States is based on the concept of 2 people meeting from two different religion with one common theme – Love. Released in 2014, the Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt was a smash hit at the time of release. Let us check out how much the romantic-drama earned at the box office.
India is a country consisting of 29 states and 7 union territories each having its own unique culture and heritage. Spark flies when people from different states meet which sometime leads to debate, humor and parental opposition especially during marriage. 2 States tells the story of simple, down-to-earth Krish( Arjun Kapoor) who falls in love with charming and bubbly Ananya( Alia Bhatt) in a college campus. As they want to take their relationship forward and decide to get married, they must convince each other parents.
Based on the novel of same name written by Chetan Bhagat, 2 States is directed by first-timer Abhishek Varman. The first half is pretty decent with boy-meet-girl romance and foot tapping songs. Things becomes interesting after the Punjabi family from boy’s side meets the Tamil family from girl’s side and the subsequent scenes in Chennai and Delhi makes it more catchy. Since I have read the book, I felt book was more hilarious as it was full of quick-witted humor and jokes which was clearly missing in the film. On the flip side, I loved the interaction between Arjun Kapoor and Ronit Roy. It was probably the highlight of the film. Songs by Shankar-Eshaan-Loy were tuneful.
Arjun Kapoor was convincing in emotional scenes. Alia Bhatt will steal your heart as refreshing Tamilian girl . She emotes expressively and is astounding in her role. Ronit Roy, Amrita Singh and Revathi were excellent in their part. According to the Boxofficeindia.com, 2 States was released at 1900 screens to Rs 12.11 crores. Produced by Sajid Nadiawala and Karan Johar, the romantic-drama collected Rs 37.17 crores in its first weekend and went onto collect Rs 58.45 crores in its first week. 2 States ended its theatrical run with Rs 101.86 crores against a budget of Rs 45 crores and turned out to be “Super-Hit” at the box office.
