Indian weddings are among those with the most ceremonies. The wealthy, who won't hesitate to bring Beyoncé in for a concert, are pushing things to an entirely new level of luxury.
The pre-wedding parties are already as extravagant as you'd expect from the family as celebrations for the marriage of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's son Anant and Radhika Merchant get underway this week in Mumbai. Anant, who is 27 years old, is the youngest son of Mukesh, chairman of the multinational corporation Reliance Industries Ltd.
But whether Anant will surpass his sister Isha's 2018 wedding is still up in the air. The week-long weddings, which were held in three locations and featured a private Beyonce concert in one of them, captivated India and made headlines all over the world.
The most extravagant Indian weddings are listed here.
1. Isha Ambani and Anand Piramal: 7 billion rupees ($86 million)
Mukesh Ambani, whose estimated net worth is $42 billion, went above and above to make sure his only daughter had a wedding to remember. The star-studded celebrations in 2018 were said to have cost 7 billion rupees and were spread out throughout Udaipur, Lake Como in Italy, and the Ambani mansion in Mumbai.
The wedding invites arrived in a box designed by Dolce & Gabbana that was embellished with pink and gold lace and chains that could be worn as jewellery.
Beyoncé reportedly received $15 million for a 45-minute performance that included many outfit changes. The who's who of Bollywood was present at the wedding celebration in Udaipur, which is famed for its palaces, including Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
Many more celebrities, including Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and even Hillary Clinton, attended a separate celebration in Mumbai.
Isha, who gave birth to twins in December, was pictured on Tuesday during her brother Anant's mehendi, or pre-wedding ritual.
2. Sushanto Roy and Seemanto Roy’s double wedding: 5.54 billion rupees
Former Indian millionaire Subrata Roy was renowned for throwing extravagant parties and mixing with cricketers and Bollywood celebrities before his shocking fall from fame. The twin boys Sushanto and Seemanto, who were married in a dual ceremony in 2004, were the only offspring of the founder and chairman of the then multi-billion dollar company Sahara India Pariwar.
On February 10, Sushanto wed Richa Ahuja, and on February 14, Seemanto wed Chandini Toor.
In the Sahara Stadium in Lucknow, a fairy-tale wedding took place with elaborate décor. Almost 11,000 visitors attended over the course of a week, including several Bollywood superstars and athletes. Another remarkable event was Roy's simultaneous marriages for 110 ladies who couldn't afford their own nuptials.
3. Brahmani Reddy and Rajiv Reddy: 5 billion rupees
Gali Janardhana Reddy, a mining magnate and former politician, received criticism for hosting an extravagant wedding for his only daughter while India was experiencing a cash flow crisis, and his 5 billion rupee celebration grabbed news for all the wrong reasons in 2016.
A wedding ceremony attended by 50,000 guests, including Bollywood celebrities and politicians, marked the conclusion of a five-day celebration for Reddy's daughter Brahmani and her husband Rajeev Reddy, the son of Hyderabad business tycoon Vikram Dev Reddy. The celebration was held at the Bangalore Palace.
According to local media sources, Reddy spent lavishly on the wedding, which included recreations of ancient Indian temples created by Bollywood art directors, opulent bull-drawn carts for guests to ride in, and enormous helium balloons with larger-than-life photographs of the couple's relatives.
For the festivities, 3,000 security officers were hired, and the bride's bridal saree alone cost 170 million rupees ($2 million). The newlyweds and the politician appeared in a video lip-syncing to an Indian song on the LCD screen of the expensive, gold-plated wedding invites.
4. Shristi Mittal and Gulraj Behl: 5 billion rupees
Like his brother, the steel mogul Laksmi Mittal, had done, Pramod Mittal spared no expense for the 2013 nuptials of his daughter Shristi Mittal to investment banker Gulraj Behl.
500 people attended the three-day Barcelona event, which featured a 60 kilogramme, six-tier wedding cake and food prepared by Spanish celebrity chef Sergi Arola. For the event, over 200 butlers and cooks were transported into Spain from India and Thailand.
On top of a hill, at the National Museum of Catalan Art, the major wedding ceremony took place. Photographers and videographers rented helicopters to film the celebrations from all sides.
5. Vanisha Mittal and Amit Bhatia: 2.4 billion rupees
Their wedding was the first of its kind, a real declaration of riches that served as the model for lavish Indian weddings.
When Lakshmi Mittal, a steel magnate, wed his daughter Vanisha to London banker Amit Bhatia in 2004, it was then the largest wedding celebration ever recorded.
The six-day event, which was spread out over several Parisian sites, included performances by Kylie Minogue and Bollywood celebrities Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Famous Bollywood playwright and poet Javed Akhtar even wrote the screenplay for a play that the Mittal family performed during a pre-wedding ceremony.
The wedding took place in the Vaux le Vicomte mansion in the 17th century after an engagement party at the Palace of Versailles. According to India Today, more than 35 artisans from Bombay were brought in to create a mandap, or the stage where the wedding rite is conducted, on a pond in the expansive gardens of the estate. Fibreglass elephants, minarets, and a sizable reception hall decorated in pink were also erected, along with flowers brought in from Holland.
Special fireworks blasted from the Eiffel Tower marked the evening's conclusion.
