In 1946 the U. S. military put off a nuclear underwater to test what would happen and it went extremely badly. The navy lowered the bomb 90 feet into the ocean and placed their ships over it in an effort to demonstrate that their ships could withstand a nuclear detonation. The lsm-60 that was directly above the bomb when the video was shot was completely destroyed. The remaining ships were devastated by intense radiation and immediately sunk.

The radioactive particles from a nuclear explosion on land are dispersed and diluted across a large area in a cloud.

But, in this case, it was trapped in the water, causing a radioactive rain to fall, covering the other ships. The Navy then tried to clean these ships up to demonstrate that they could withstand the explosion, but the crew members started to become ill from the radiation.

It was concluded that in order to reach a tolerable radiation level, these ships would have required to be reduced virtually to nothing.

Note: From the 1940s until the 1990s, 60 km of the region close to the nuclear test site was left open for public visitation, and the Navel ships that were destroyed were retired from duty.
