Harry Styles unexpectedly won Album of the Year for Harry’s House at Friday night’s Grammy Awards, beating out nominees like Beyoncé, Adele, Kendrick Lamar, and more. Internet users were startled, and several Grammys attendees voiced their disappointment that Styles defeated Beyoncé.
Some supporters heckled Styles as he delivered his acceptance speech, yelling “Beyoncé” and “Beyoncé should have won.” The video of this and Taylor Swift‘s response to it are both trending on TikTok. Swift remained still while Styles spoke, paying close attention to him. When she heard heckling, she pretended to glance down. According to BuzzFeed, several fans thought the incident could have made her think of the notorious moment when Kanye West cut off her 2009 VMAs speech by saying Beyoncé ought to have won.
On Grammy night, Swift gave Styles a lot of support. She not only applauded him during his performance and acceptance speeches, but she also sneaked over to his table once during the performance to speak with him. She reportedly embraced him and had a “long discussion” with him, according to Chris Gardner of The Hollywood Reporter. The evening’s cameras also captured her placing her hand on his back.
Beyoncé, who became the Grammys’ most awarded performer ever Sunday night, has never taken home the Album of the Year trophy. The fact that she didn’t win for Renaissance or Lemonade really shocked supporters. Beyoncé lost out to Adele in 2017 for her album 25, and Adele famously refused to accept the trophy on stage because she believed Beyoncé deserved to win.
Adele remarked during her acceptance speech, “I can’t possibly take this award, and I’m incredibly humbled, very thankful, and gracious but my life is Beyoncé, and the album to me, the Lemonade album, Beyoncé, was so significant, and so well-thought-out. We all enjoyed seeing a different side of you that you don’t normally allow us to see since it was so lovely and soul-baring, and we thank you for that. We artists all admire you. You are our beacon. Furthermore, the way you make my Black friends and I feel is inspiring, and you inspire us to stand up for ourselves. And I cherish you. I have always. And I will always. I’m grateful for it.
Backstage, Styles admitted that his Album of the Year victory had taken him by surprise because the winners of these prizes are never certain. Reporters questioned him about whether he thought Beyoncé would win, and he responded, “You never know with this stuff. You can’t possibly look at any of the nominees and not feel that they deserve to win, in my opinion. I realize that everyone in this category is someone who has influenced me at some point, so you wouldn’t really comprehend someone winning, right? And yes, I’m quite appreciative that they picked us.
