1. We got Independence

On 15 August 1947 India became independent from the British Empire following the Independence Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and his message of nonviolent resistance. The handover of power was overseen by Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy of India.

The Indian independence movement was a series of historic events with the ultimate aim of ending British rule in India. It lasted from 1857 to 1947. The first nationalistic revolutionary movement for Indian independence emerged from Bengal.

2. 1951 general elections and women's rights to vote

General elections were held in India between 25 October 1951 and 21 February 1952. They were the first elections to the Lok Sabha after independence in August 1947. It was conducted under the provisions of the Indian Constitution, which was adopted on 26 November 1949.

Since the very first Indian general election held in 1951–52, universal suffrage for all adult citizens aged 21 or older was established under Article 326 of the Constitution of India.

Way back in 1921, Madras was the first legislature in British India to pass the women’s suffrage. This meant that for the first time, women were recognised as ‘people’ by the State, thereby given the right to vote on the same condition as men.

3. India won the world cup

On 25 June 1983, India under the leadership of legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev scripted history by winning the Prudential World Cup for the maiden time. Lord's was the scene for India's greatest cricketing triumph at the time, as they beat two-time winners West Indies by 43 runs to lift the coveted trophy.

5. A woman became President of India

Pratibha Devisingh Patil (born 19 December 1934) is an Indian politician and lawyer who served as the 12th president of India from 25 July 2007 to July 2012.

A member of the Indian National Congress, Patil is the only woman to have held the office. She had previously served as the Governor of Rajasthan from 2004 to 2007. Patil was announced as the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate on 14 June 2007.

6. Launching of Chandrayaan

Chandrayaan-1 (transl. Moon-craft, audio speaker iconpronunciation (help·info) was the first Indian lunar probe under the Chandrayaan program. It was launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation in October 2008, and operated until August 2009.

The mission included a lunar orbiter and an impactor. India launched the spacecraft using a PSLV-XL rocket on 22 October 2008 at 00:52 UTC from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

7. LGBTQ rights

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in India have been evolving rapidly in recent years. However, Indian LGBT citizens still face certain social and legal difficulties not experienced by non-LGBT persons.

The country has repealed its colonial-era laws that directly discriminated against homosexual and transgender identities and also explicitly interpreted Article 15 of the Constitution to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

8. Fighting COVID-19
