Late Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal was awarded Shaurya Chakra (posthumous) for his valour and sacrifice during a terrorist operation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. President Ramnath Kovind handed over the award to late Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal's wife Nitika Kaul and mother Saroj Dhoundiyal on November 22.

Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal joined the Army at the age of 24 in the year 2011. He first served in his home regiment for 8 years before being deputed to 55 Rashtriya Rifles at Pulwama base in 2019, just months after he got married to his wife Nitika Kaul who is now a serving leutinent in the Indian Army.

After being deployed to Pulwama, Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal led several successful operations as a part of the anti-insurgency department. On February 17, 2019 his battalion along with J&K police launched a search operation on the basis of credible information from the intelligence agencies. As per the intelligence inputs, terrorists involved in Pulwama attack on security force were said to be hiding in the neighborhood and were in search of an opportunity to execute another similar attack on the security forces. During his last operation under the suprvision of Brigadier Harbir Singh, Major Dhoundiyal and his battalion successfully killed five terrorist and recovered 200 kgs of explosives. Major Dhoundiyal made his supreme sacrifice during the operation after being in the middle of gun fire from terrorists that last for more than 22 hours.
