Karvachauth is an important Hindu festival which comes 4 days after the full moon in the month of Kartika. This year, it will be celebrated on 24th October. On this day, married women observe a fast for the whole day for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. In general, this festival is celebrated in the northern parts of India, however, it is also celebrated in Andhra Pradesh as ‘Atla Tadde ’.

Apart from married women, unmarried women also celebrate this day by fasting for their husbands-to-be. Women buy new traditional clothes, pieces of jewellery and puja items, a few days before the festival. On the day of the festival, women apply mehndi (henna) on their hands, put on makeup and wear red sarees. They dress up like a newly-wed woman.
