World Food Day: India Falls on 101 in Hunger Index Behind Pakistan and Nepal, Check Details Here

India finds 101^st spot in World Hunger Index slips 7 positions below from last year’s 94^th position. With this only 15 countries left behind India to have worse stats in the hunger index.

On World Food Day, Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Life prepares a report among 116 countries. The GHI score is calculated on four indicators — undernourishment; child wasting (the share of children under the age of five who have low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition); child stunting (children under the age of five who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition); child mortality (the mortality rate of children under the age of five).

The report mentions that the level of hunger in India as “alarming” with its GHI score decelerating from 38.8 in 2000 to the range of 28.8 – 27.5 between 2012 and 2021. “People have been severely hit by COVID-19 and by pandemic related restrictions in India, the country with highest child wasting rate worldwide,” the report said.

A total of 18 countries, including China, Kuwait and Brazil, shared the top rank with GHI score of less than five, the GHI website that tracks hunger and malnutrition across countries said on Thursday.

Neighbours Nepal (76), Bangladesh (76), Myanmar (71) and Pakistan (92) are also in the ‘alarming’ hunger category but have fared better at feeding its citizens than India, the report said. India reacted angrily on Friday, calling the methodology used for the rankings unscientific and saying it was shocked by the drop in its position.
