Despite suspicions the delta variant would restrain moviegoers at home, Ryan Reynolds' sci-fi action comedy 'Free Guy' had an amazing start at the domestic box office.

The movie received $26 million from 4,165 North American theatres. Given its production fund above $100 million, those ticket sales wouldn't be much to enjoy in pre-pandemic periods but isn't a bad result assessing the present circumstance.

Overseas, 'Free Guy' accumulated $22.5 million for a global tally of $51 million.
'Free Guy' marks an intriguing test for the movie presentation industry because it's playing solely in theatres, which is a rarity these days. Several high-profile movies that were released during the pandemic, such as Marvel's 'Black Widow' and 'The Suicide Squad', were accessible on streaming platforms on the same day as their theatrical releases. The few movies offered only in theatres, like 'F9', Emily Blunt and John Krasinski's follow-up 'A Quiet Place Part II' and 'G.I. Joe' origin story 'Snake Eyes', were a sequel in prominent movie franchises, unlike 'Free Guy', which is based on a new concept and isn't part of a prevailing movie universe.

Though COVID-19 is clearly deterring people from travelling to their local multiplex, 'Free Guy' had many components working in its favour. Thanks to powerful inspections and an "A" Cinema Score from viewers, it celebrated favourable word-of-mouth over the weekend. The PG-13 movie also profited because it appealed to senior males, a demographic that has seemed to be less wary about coming to the big screen.

This box-office achievement comes just after leading man Ryan Reynolds declared that the sequel of the film has been green-lit.

The story revolves around Guy played by Reynolds who is a bank teller who realizes that he's actually an NPC (non-player character) inside a harsh, open-world video game, hereafter agreeing to become the hero of the story, by saving his friends from getting eliminated by the game's creator.

Reynolds took to Twitter to posted the update on the sequel.

"Aaaannnnd after 3 years messaging #FreeGuy as an original IP movie, Disney confirmed today they officially want a sequel. Woo hoo!! #irony. If it isn't called, 'Albuquerque Boiled Turkey' we've failed," the actor inscribed.

"Free Guy" is based on the script composed by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn.

Actors Dwayne Johnson, John Krasinski, Hugh Jackman, Channing Tatum, Joe Keery, Tina Fey and Lil Rel Howery complete the cast. Chris Evans also makes a cameo in the movie.
