Also penned by Gunn, the movie stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi in major roles.

The movie has earned incredibly positive critical acceptance, and deservedly so. It is a madcap joy, full of gore, black humour, deep characters, and lots of surprises.

The story interests itself with Amanda Waller’s Task Force X, a team of metahuman muck who are hired from the dreaded Belle Reve prison, a facility specially constructed to restrict superpowered criminals.

Spoilers Ahead

There are two separate teams, and one — consisted of Captain Boomerang, Savant, Blackguard, Harley Quinn, Weasel, and others — is just a diversion. Most of them are shortly dispensed off by the enemy military.

The other one — including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Rick Flag, King Shark (Nanaue), Ratcatcher 2, Polka-Dot Man — is deployed on a different beach and are assigned with eradicating a secret lab called Jötunheim in the fictitious South American country of Corto Maltese. Jötunheim is a sinister lab prison where humans are experimented upon. It also houses a giant extra-terrestrial beast called Starro that is shaped like a starfish and can shoot spores that infect humans like the Alien in Ridley Scott’s classic.

In the end, it is disclosed that the US government’s objective to eliminate the lab was not to stop the awful experiments but to destroy their role in it to prevent an uneasy situation. When Flag tries to ensure the evidence of the American role, the Peacemaker assassinates him. He is disclosed to be working for Amanda. Ultimately Bloodsport shoots him and he dies.

As Starro rampages, the lasting Suicide Squad members agree to disobey Amanda’s orders to abandon and kill Starro and save the Corto Maltese people. They succeed.

As the film climaxes, Bloodsport has made a contract with Amanda. She will not hurt the residing Task Force X members, and they, in turn, will not share America’s war scandals with the world.

A mid-credits scene discloses that Weasel, who was believed to have submerged, is still alive. He ambles towards the jungle.

But it is the post-credit scene that is fascinating. We see Peacemaker, whose throat was hit by Bloodsport’s bullet and a building collapsed on him, is still somehow breathing. He is recouping in a hospital and two people on Amanda’s payroll, John and Emilia, come up and give him his task: “Save the fu**ing world.”

It looks like Peacemaker has another journey to save the world from something. And we will see precisely what that is in HBO Max’s Peacemaker spinoff series that has already finished filming and will debut in early 2022.

The series will also investigate the lineages of the Peacemaker apart from renewing his story. It will be intriguing to see an undeniably delightful character being scanned in more detail. Although he is an uncouth, ferocious rascal, he is also more problematic and regrets his evil actions even as he engages them.
