India women's hockey team lost 1-2 to Argentina in the semi-final match on Wednesday. Gurjit Kaur gave India the lead early in the match by converting a penalty corner.
Argentina hit back in the second quarter as their captain Noel Barrionuevo scored the equaliser. The Argentine skipper scored again in the third quarter to make put India behind.
The Indian team fought hard in the final 15 minutes but Argentina's experience helped them keep the danger away as the successfully defended their lead. Argentina will now take on Netherlands in the gold medal match while India will be up against Great Britain in the bronze medal clash.
Noel Barrionuevo scored both the goals for the Argentines as India went down 2-1 after a spirited show in the final quarter of the match. Earlier, India women started off brilliant by taking the lead as Gurjit Kaur converted the first penalty corner India got but Argentina came back strongly in the second quarter by scoring the equaliser. Both teams were locked 1-1 at half-time.
The Indian women's hockey team has already made history by reaching the semifinals for the first time. Now they can add a golden hue to their fairy-tale run by beating Argentina in Wednesday's semifinal. Having beaten world No. 2 Australia in the quarterfinals on Monday, the Indians will be bullish against Argentina.
They have exceeded their expectations, they have nothing to lose and all the experience to gain by playing one of the top teams. But they can't be complacent as this is an opportunity of a lifetime to reach the final at the Olympic Games.
