Content is the king which makes the film interesting to watch and drives the audience to the theaters, despite it being a small, medium or large budgeted. As Vicky Kaushal starrer URI-The Surgical Strike is closing its theater run after 11th week, let us look at the other small budgeted cinema which became all-time blockbusters at the box office, thanks to its wonderful content.
Released in 1975, the religious film. Jai Santoshi Maa was made on a shoe-string budget of Rs 55 lakhs approx. The film was released with just with 15 prints but created a record-breaking collections at that time, generating a staggering Rs 400 crores (adjusted net gross). The film with no big stars, surprisingly emerged as one of the highest-grossing releases of 1975 and was even compared with films like Sholay and Deewaar. Produced and directed by B.R.Chopra. Nikaah was another small-budgeted cinema with not-so-famous actors which became a sensational blockbuster of 1982.
Mansoor Khan launched two fresh faces – Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak in 1988. Based on the modern-day Romeo-Juliet’s love story, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak became a golden jubilee hit after running for 50 weeks. Aamir Khan also won his first National Award for his debut feature film.
Directed by Aanand L Rai, Tanu Weds Manu Returns was a laugh-riot which became the highest grossing film of Kangana Ranaut with a collection of Rs 150.68 crores (approx). Though Tanu Weds Manu Returns was made at a budget of Rs 39 crores, the film also holds the record for the highest grossing medium-budget film. Made on a budget of Rs 30 Crores, Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Badhaai Ho went on to collect an eye-popping Rs 134 crores last year which was truly phenomenal.
Thanks to the exceptional word-of-mouth reviews, URI-The Surgical Strike broke all the records this year and ended its collection to Rs 244.06 crores after a sensational 11 weeks run. Directed by Aditya Dhar, URI was made on a budget of Rs 42 Crores all inclusive of prints and advertising cost (Production Cost: 35 Crore & Prints & Advertising Cost: 7 Crore). The film is based on the 2016 Indian Army’s surgical strikes on Pakistan Administered Kashmir as a retaliation for the URI attack.
