Movie : Luka Chuppi
Director : Laxman Utekar
Rating : 4/5
We have seen films earlier like Salaam Namaste, Cocktail, Shudh Desi Romance etc based on the back-drop of the struggles of being in a love-in relationship but they have either been overtly serious towards the end or become tragic. Directed by Laxman Utekar, Luka Chuppi is a fresh take on the same topic which is a major taboo in India with non-stop entertainment from the start till the very end.
Starring Kartik Aaryan as Guddu Sharma and Kriti Sanon as Rashmi Trivedi who hail from Mathura, the film has super funny situations and a stellar supporting cast in form of Pankaj Tripathi, Vinay Pathak, Aparshakti Khurrana etc who come together to provide you a fun-riot. From the performances to the situational comedy, the film clearly is a paisa-vasool and also has an underlying message which is delivered in an entertaining yet impacting manner.
Plot : Guddu and Rashmi fell in love and want to give their relationship a concrete step but as Rashmi needs more time to know Guddu better, she gives the idea of being in a live-in relationship for which Guddu says no but agrees later. Here is where the adventure starts! From giving this experience a trial in a different city to making sure it works, Guddu & Rashmi keep finding them in situations which are nothing but hysterical. The shakki padosan, a jasoos family friend (played by Pankaj Tripathi) and a Hitler of a father (played by Vinay Pathak) keep giving the film the right amount of twists and turns it needs to keep the audience wanting for more. The two do it all to sustain their love right from faking a marriage to trying to get married somewhere secretly as they are declared married in front of their families. What happens next is a tale of madness and fun unleashed.
Performances : Kartik is a total show-stealer in Luka Chuppi where you just can’t take eyes off the actor and his super smooth Guddu act which is endearing as well as brilliant. His scenes are meaty and the newly crowned prince of Bollywood makes full use of it. It is a delight to see the actor try something like this and he has scored a full 10/10 with his witty & comical performance. Kriti Sanon as Rashmi is contained and refreshing and looks stunning throughout the film. Her character is fun and bubbly and she does full justice to it. Not to forget, Pankaj Tripathi as a trouble-maker spy is one of the best parts of the film where he has given a top-notch performance and shines throughout. He will definitely make you laugh. Last but not the least, Vinay Tripathi is back and for all the right reasons. He plays a politician who hates the concept of live-in relationships and the terror he creates with his persona is purely entertaining. Do more films please?
What We Loved : Apart from Kartik’s bravura of an act, the music of the film is also one of the many reasons why Luka Chuppi scores! All the songs right from Photo to Coca Cola will make you tap your feet and sing discreetly. The direction is crisp and the dialogues are the backbone of the film. The comical situations which are created in the film clearly entertain the audience which was evident from a rush of applause when the movie ended. Lastly, all the scenes where Kartik’s older brother craves to get married and is saddened by his younger married getting married earlier are hysterical.
Final Verdict : Not even one moment is dull in Luka Chuppi and Kartik’s chemistry with Kriti is a must-watch. The two actors are refreshing together and a good script with fast-paced story-telling especially in the second half make Luka Chuppi a winner. A solid 4 stars out of 5 and we highly recommend you to watch this family-entertainer.
