It was a surprising month for Bollywood as medium budgeted films like Romeo Akbar Walter Akbar and The Tashkent Files wooed the multiplex junta while extremely high budgeted multi-starrer Kalank fizzed out at the box office.
Romeo Akbar Walter – 5th April
After giving back-to-back hits last year with Parmanu-The Story Of Pokhran and Satyameva Jayate, John Abraham started April with RAW (Romeo Akbar Walter), which tells the story of Indian Spy Ravindra Kaushik. Ravindra Kaushik was a RAW agent who passed on valuable information to RAW which was of great help to the Indian defence forces as part of his activities in Pakistan. Thrashed by critics but loved by the audience, Romeo Akbar Walter picked up slowly and steadily at the ticket window. RAW (Romeo Akbar Walter) did better than expected in its first week with Rs 32.05. crores followed by a reasonable Rs 8.70 crores in the second week as it got affected by Kalank which released in mid-week and ended its theater run with Rs 43 crores (approx) against a budget of Rs 34 crores (Production Cost: 24 Crore, Prints & Advertising Cost: 10 Crore)
The Tashkent Files – 12th April
The only pivotal release in Bollywood on 12th April was the hard-hitting drama – The Tashkent Files. Starring actors like Shweta Prasad, Mithun Chakraborty, Pankaj Tripathi, Naseeruddin Shah and Pallavi Joshi which revolves around the mysterious death of India’s 2nd Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri. Like the John Abraham starrer Romeo Akbar Walter, The Tashkent Files was rejected by the critics but the user reviews had different story to tell (refer the user reviews in BookMyShow.com and IMDB.com).
The feedback from the audience have been positive which led The Tashkent Files collect Rs 3.50 crores (1st week), Rs 4.22 crores (2nd week which is better than 1st week and inspite of reduced screen count to just 160), Rs 3.77 crores (3rd week which is again better than first week) and still minting money as it enters fourth weekend, bringing the overall total to Rs 12 crores (still counting) against a budget of Rs 3 crores (approx). The current earnings of The Tashkent Files is better than the next film in discussion.
Kalank – 18th April
The Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt, Aditya Roy Kapur, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha and Madhuri Dixit starrer Kalank opened to a record breaking opening of 2019 with Rs 21.60 crores on Wednesday due to Mahavir Jayanti holiday. However, movie was met with dismal reviews by both audience and critics due to poor content which started showing cracks at its box office collections. Kalank has almost exhausted its run now with a weak Rs 84 crores (approx) against a mammoth budget of Rs 150 crores (Production Cost: 120 Crore, Prints & Advertising Cost: 30 Crore). This will be the biggest disaster film for Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar.
Avengers: Endgame – 26th April
While Kalank brought grief to the trade, Avengers:Endgame changed the fortune as it broke so many box office records in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages. The super-hero film is now 3rd highest opening film after the Prabhas starrer Bahubali 2 and Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar starrer 2.0 at the box office in all languages.
As you read this articles, Avenegers: Endgame will create another history by crossing 300 crores in just 10 days.
