Valentine’s Day isn’t even a real holiday, but somehow we all get roped into “celebrating” it every year. It’s a divisive holiday that allows no middle ground – either you’re one part of a loved-up couple or out there on your own. Because of this, we’ve decided to split our Valentine’s Day viewing recommendations into these two camps, something for the cupids and something for the grouches.
But while many people will turn to their favorite romantic comedy to celebrate the day or Fifty Shades Darker to liven up their evening, those of us who will be single on V-Day this year might prefer something with a little more bite than your standard swoon-worthy drama.
So, for all our fellow singletons out there, we present this list of anti rom-com, which will pair perfectly with a glass (or two) of wine and a pint of ice cream.
Based on the true story of Chery Stayed who hiked 1700 kilometers over three months to clear her head after an emotionally turbulent few year, this movie is getting rave reviews and earned the two stars – Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern – Oscar nominations. Aside from making you want to pack your bags and head off on an epic adventure, it will remind you that if you’re broken, the only person who can build you back up is you.
Quote from the film: “My mother used to say something that drove me nuts. There is a sunrise and a sunset every day and you can choose to be there for it. You can put yourself in the way of beauty.” Cheryl (Reese Witherspoon)
Little Miss Sunshine
The motley crew that is the Hoover family go on a road trip so the youngest member Olive can compete in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant even though she doesn’t look, talk or act like a typical pageant girl. The message? Don’t change for anyone. Follow your own arrow, wherever it points.
500 Days Of Summer
It’s exactly what a rom-com isn’t: boy meets girl, boy falls in love, girl doesn’t. Cue lots of angst, which teaches us your perfect partner isn’t perfect, they’re the person who will love you unconditionally, forever.
Quote of the film: “Just because she likes the same bizarre crap you do doesn’t mean she’s your soulmate.” Rachel (Chloe Grace Moretz)
Does this even need explaining?! It will make you laugh, appreciate your family (as well as sponge cake and a big two stroke engine on full throttle) and fill you with so many good vibes you’ll practically burst.
Quote of the film: “It’s the vibe…” Dennis Denuto
The Silence Of Lambs
There’s a serial killer at large, and a young FBI agent-in-training goes to see another cannibalistic serial killer serving life behind bars for help in apprehending him. There’s not a skerrick of romance in this superb thriller/horror, which is why it’s the perfect anti-V-Day film.
Quote from the film: “A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.” Dr Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins)
Thelma and Louise
Two best friends take off in a 1966 Ford Thunderbird convertible on a road trip that doesn’t go as planned. This is the ultimate story of friendship, but you could also take a warning for your love life: a one night stand is fun (especially if he looks like Brad Pitt) but also potentially dangerous.
Quote from the film: “You said you ‘n me was gonna get out of town and for once just really let our hair down. Well, darlin’, look out ‘cause my hair is comin’ down!” Thelma (Geena Davis)
Devil Wears Prada
When Andy scores her dream job, it comes with a bitchy boss, a head-to-toe makeover and some of the best one-liners of all time. This movie proves that sometimes what we think will be amazing isn’t quite right for us – we’re talking jobs AND relationships here!
Quote from the film: “By all means move at a glacial pace. You know how that thrills me.” Miranda (Meryl Streep)
