Bollywood Actress Divya Dutta penned an open letter ahead of the environment day.
Ahead of the world environment day, I got a call from the journalists to give my quotes… I just wondered how a quote will do anything for the environment??? It will be heard and seen and then people will go about their lives… it’s the easiest thing to pass comments… but do they help anyway?? Ek din ki khabar, bas.
I took my little sakhi for a walk at the beach… it was a break day and nothing better than spending an early morning walk with your baby in the sand and feel the cool breeze… and the morning sun but what I saw shocked me… there where I thought I’d brush my bare feet with the waves lay mountains of plastic… all over. Not an inch to walk. The sea had vomited it all out after a stormy night… I looked in utter disbelief!!!! My little sakhi moved back, not knowing where to walk… there was not a soul on the beach except a few stray dogs. Everyone must have seen the plight of the beach and returned.. But is that all we do.. return?? And leave that work for the assigned people, to clean up… or may be comment on the sad state?? But when they look at that mess, do they even look within and ask, is one of those plastic bags thrown by me too??? Did I add to this cacophony??
So if I cannot clean the entire thing, let me just make an effort to at least not throw it too.?
I joined up with a few NGOs and went to clean up the beach but a nagging thought kept coming back.. we clean it up today… but people will throw stuff again tomorrow. Who will I stop them???
And they are least bothered to make an effort their world of cleanliness revolves only around their houses… beyond that is not their concern and none of their business. What causes such insensitivity I wonder sometimes, towards your own city, your own country… is it just the lack of education and civic sense??
A sense of dismay trickled inside me… what are we doing to our environment… everything is being commercialized. Trees are being cut, new constructions are being done… we are gradually taking away all the green land… killing the flora and fauna…. we are now getting chemical induced fruits and veggies.
Nature is going away from us… and we are choosing to turn our heads away thinking it’s ok, life’s moving na.
I wonder till how long will nature allow us to abuse it… these are warning bells we dare not ignore… restore what rightfully belongs to nature… or it will show it’s wrath in the most unexpected ways…
as I give my quotes to wish everyone a very happy world environment day… my glance goes to the sea shore and all the plastics that the sea has thrown out… very strangely sahir sahab’s sher came to my head… what if the environment said” duniya ne tajurbat o hawadis ki shaql mein, jo kuch mujhe diya, Lauta raha Hun main…..”
