Hollywood’s No Strings Attached stance when it comes to the pay gap between its actors and actresses came to the fore once again when actress Natalie Portman complained that Ashton Kutcher, her co-star in the 2011 film of the same name, was paid almost thrice her salary.
“Ashton Kutcher was paid three times as much as me on No Strings Attached,” Natalie declared to the Marie Claire magazine.
Portman is the recent in a slew of actresses who have complained about the gender bias and pay gap in Hollywood after a hack in Sony in 2015 revealed the salaries of several Hollywood stars and the difference in the wages of the male and female actors.
Natalie has labelled the bias ‘crazy’. “I knew and I went along with it because there’s this thing with ‘quotes’ in Hollywood. His was three times higher than mine, so they said he should get three times more. I wasn’t as p***ed as I should have been. I mean, we get paid a lot, so it’s hard to complain, but the disparity is crazy.”
Despite sharing equal screen time as Kutcher in No Strings Attached, Portman wasn’t acknowledged as much financially by the producers of the film.
“Compared to men, in most professions, women make 80 cents to the dollar. In Hollywood, we are making 30 cents to the dollar,” pointed out Natalie.
Guess it ain’t all glossy and sunshine in Hollywood either, eh?
