Meryl Streep Was Defended by Late-Night Hosts after Trump’s Attack

Well, Trump, as usual, strikes again. During Meryl Streep‘s speech for her Cecil B. DeMille award, Streep pointed out how the president-elect of the United State imitated a disabled reporter on a public platform. She said, “This instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing.”

However, Trump was quick to react to the speech. He posted on Twitter, blasting the actress. He said, “Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him ‘groveling’ when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”

Okay, wow, Meryl Streep and overrated? Are you f**king serious right now?

I’m sorry, but do you forget that she’s one of those most venerated actresses in the movie industry all over the WORLD? Because I think Trump completely forgot that in his rant.

However! Meryl Streep isn’t alone! All the amazing late-night hosts have got her back. All of them defended Streep on their respective Late night shows on January 9, after Trump‘s stupid Twitter comment.

Meryl Streep

During The Late Show, Stephen Colbert pointed out the the business mogul should be more concerned with running the country. He said, “Trump was too focused on defeating ISIS and creating jobs to pick a fight with a celebrity. Just kidding,” he said. “Wait a second, I’m sorry, what? What? What did you just say? Meryl Streep, overrated? Have you seen Sophie’s Choice? Have you seen The French Lieutenant’s Woman? Have you seen that one with the dead people, that she’s even funny in that one? Look, Mr. Trump, you can refuse to release your taxes. You can call to ban an entire religion. You can play footsie with a dictator. But calling Meryl Streep overrated? No! No! Too far.”

You can skip to 1:07.

James Corden, who costarred with Streep in Into the Woods, during The Late Late Show also stood up for the 3-time Oscar winner. “In a tense exchange yesterday, a U.S. Navy destroyer fired warning shots at fast-approaching Iranian naval ships.. So, of course, our president-elect tweeted about how overrated Meryl Streep is,” he said on The Late Late Show. “I mean sure, she’s no Scott Baio, but overrated, you know, like when a reality star who’s filed for bankruptcy is elected President of the United States, it’s like that. Truth is, this was actually good news for Meryl — because ‘most overrated actress in Hollywood’ was literally the only award she hadn’t won yet.”

Conan O’Brien made up this fake phone call between Trump and President Barack Obama on Conan and he imagined what actress the president elect might actually like. In the pretend conversation, Trump asked, “Listen, ya see my tweet about Meryl Streep?” When Obama replied, “Yes, it was ridiculous. She’s a beloved figure and an incredibly talented actress,” Trump quipped, “She’s no Tara Reid.”

Seth Meyers also spoke up for Streep as well. He dedicated his “Closer Look” segment on the Late Night to the feud. “Overrated? She’s so good, people use her to compliment people in other professions. Like LeBron James is the Meryl Streep of basketball. Or Donald Trump is the Meryl Streep of having thin skin,” he said. “Whether these tweets are calculated distractions or just the ramblings of an unhinged narcissist, it’s clear Trump would much rather talk about his feud with Meryl Streep than, say, the fact that intelligence officials believe Russia hacked the Democratic National Committee and the Trump campaign to help Trump win the election.”

We’re glad that these amazing hosts who can influence so many people are standing up for Meryl Streep when Trump decided to focus on starlet rather on his own country.

A Hollywood, lifestyle and listicle writer of the finest kind, with a sarcasm that could make make the Statue of Liberty sigh and jokes that could make sunflowers turn away from the sun to laugh, you can always count on her to make your day brighter and bring a smile on your face.
