A Bollywood bombshell and one of the industry’s most fine actress, Bipasha Basu, turns 38 today. While the actress, post her marriage with actor Karan Singh Grover, is taking things a little slow on the career front, her evolution, as a fitness icon, and as a performer, is there for all to see and admire. To say that Bipasha has created her own, well deserved space in the industry would be no lie.
Today, on her birthday, we decided to go back in time, and explore the rise of Bipasha Basu, as she took on one courageous and demanding role after another, exploring territories few other actresses would dare to. From a sex symbol to an actress of substance, Bipasha has indeed proved herself through some brilliant and diverse roles in her films. Here’s looking at 6 roles that shall remain etched in our minds as some of the finest performances by Bipasha.
1. RAAZ (2002)
Bipasha is probably the only actress in Bollywood who seems to have a natural attachment for the supernatural! The number of horror films she has done justifies this fact and if one were to chronicle this attachement of hers, we’d have to start with Vikram Bhatt’s Raaz in 2001.Bipasha memorable potrayal of a woman, possesed by her lover’s former girlfriend, was what gave Bollywood one of its best horor films. It was the second highest grossing film of the time and spurred a franchise of films under the same name. Bipasha and Dino Morea won the Zee Cine Dynamic Duo award for the film. Bipasha also returned to the franchise in Raaz 3.
2. JISM (2003)
Undoubtedly one of the most sexiest films in B-Town and the film that established Bipasha Basu as a sex-symbol. Jism saw Bipasha playing the wife of a travelling millionnaire who has a stormy affair with a lover, essayed by John Abraham. It was this film that started the memorable affair between John and Bipasha and gave the audiences a sizzling new pair. Bipasha oozed of sensuality in every frame in the film. Her dialogue- “Yeh Jism pyaar nahi jaanta, jaanta hai to sirf bhook, jism ki bhook”, became a rage after the film’s release and was used by KJo in Kal Ho Na Ho as well. The role won Bipasha a Filmfare nomination for Best Villain.
3. NO ENTRY (2005)
The super successful comic caper, directed by Anees Bazmee, saw Bipasha in her comic capacity for the first time. Essaying the role of a hooker in the film, Bipasha showed a different dimension of her acting prowess, matching her comic timing with stalwarts such as Anil Kapoor and Salman Khan. Bipasha yet again earned a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film.
4. BACHNA AE HASEENO (2008)
Bipasha’s acting chops got their due credit and attention in the big league when she was seen in YRF’s Bachna Ae Haseeno opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Playing one of the girls thwarted by Ranbir’s character, who then later claims her revenge, Bipasha played a headstrong yet emotional and successful model in the film. Her interesting chemistry with Ranbir Kapoor won her many accolades. She also showed some of her dancing abilities in the film. The film received a decent response and fetched nominations for Bipasha in several popular award shows.
5. CORPORATE (2006)
One of the more underrated movies of Bipasha, Corporate indeed saw the actress put on a stellar performance as a corporate employee of a huge MNC. The film, which gave an insight into how the corporate industry works and how rival companies battle it out against each other, saw Bipasha in a meaty role with ample scope for performance and she did full justice to it. She also won the GIFA Best Actress award for her role in the film.
6. RACE (2008)
The stylish action thriller, which proved to be a huge draw at the box office, saw Bipasha in an action oriented role. Peforming stunts and essaying a shrewd character with equal finesse, Bipasha and Saif had an amazing chemistry in the film. Race was the fourth highest grossing film of 2008. A sequel to the film also saw Bipasha in a cameo.
7. OMKARA (2006)
We can’t help but give a special mention to Omkara, where though Bipasha didn’t have much of a role, Bollywood got Beedi Jalaiye, thanks to her! The song won awards for its composition, choreography, lyrics and singing in several award shows.
